Dear Mythology Kids,
If you missed class, we completed the following. PLEASE COMMUNICATE with someone in class. You need to return on Tuesday prepared for class, even though you were not present today!

1. Students were introduced to their "Creative Assignment," which is due on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17th. This assignment acts as the final exam for this term. I have included the explanation here. Please read through it, and communicate with a peer regarding questions.




“How well do you know the Pantheon?”
Mythology 2017-18

DUE DATE:_________________________

Explanation: At this point, you should have a greater understanding of the Greek pantheon. This  assignment offers you the opportunity to creatively apply what you have learned  to something concrete.
Requirements:
1.      1. Select ONE member of the Greek Pantheon for your assignment
( Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Athena, Hephaestus, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Ares, Hermes, Dionysus, Hestia). I recommend your selection focus on interest and intrigue.
2.      You will need to do some research regarding your chosen god; research beyond the information already shared with you in class. You must have a minimum of THREE ADDITIONAL SOURCES (one must be a book).
3.       "Consider symbols and characteristics associated with your god such as behaviors, myths, animals, birds, colors, and other gods connected to your choice.
4.      Use the newly found information, and the previous information offered in class, to CREATE a PHYSICAL PIECE that thoroughly proves your understanding of the god. (Relax! I will share some examples with you.)
Example Ideas (previous students):
1.      Throne
2.      Script
3.      Interior design
4.      Clothing design
5.      Greeting cards
6.      Restaurant
Criteria/Guidelines:
1.      If you choose to use paper, then projects must be a minimum of 13x18 in size. If you choose to create a product that has different components to it, then you will need to make sure that the paper used for each part is 13x18. For example, if you were to design a seasonal clothing line for Artemis, then you would include one rendering on one piece of paper. You would have FOUR total pieces of paper because there are four seasons.
NOTE: I am happy to supply you with white paper, but you will need to supply all other materials.

2.      NO LEGOS
3.      NO FOOD
4.      Color is required (You select the medium).
5.      No pieces from your home should be attached to the project (ie. jewelry, pictures, ceramics, plastic pieces, etc.)
6.       One page minimum (MLA Format) paper that explains and justifies your choices.
7.      A Works Cited page referencing the sources you used for additional information.
8.      Oral justification of your project

NOTE: Whatever you decide to create, the final outcome must thoroughly prove your understanding, and support what you have learned about the god. GO BEYOND WHAT HAS BEEN OFFERED TO YOU IN CLASS, my young friends! Think like Hephaestus, Hermes, and Athena.

2. Students went to the library in order to locate their three sources and type the Works Cited page for those sources. This was submitted at the end of class.

IF YOU WERE NOT PRESENT, then you need to come to class on Tuesday prepared with your THREE SOURCES and the WORKS CITED for those sources. I shared an example with each student today in class. Please communicate with one of your peers.

HOMEWORK:
1 Annotate/Notate the sources located today for INFORMATION THAT YOU DID NOT KNOW prior to reading the source, and INFORMATION THAT YOU FOUND INTERESTING. Please use Blue for the "did not know" information and orange for the "interesting" info.

2. Start working on your PROJECT! October 17th will be here soon!

Monday, September 25th! It's the final week of September!

Dear Mythology kids,
If you missed class today, we finished obtaining the information regarding the Greek Pantheon. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU COMMUNICATE WITH A FRIEND regarding Apollo, Artemis, Hestia, Dionysus, and the Unknown go.

1. The TEST concerning the Greek Pantheon will take place on Wednesday, September 27th. I recommend reviewing with friends (for at least an hour). Greek name, Roman name, symbols, and domains will appear on the test, as well as images of the myths associated with the gods. You will be asked to offer schema on each image. There is also a section where you will be given pieces of poetry that reference the gods. You will be asked to identify the god, and then explain what is taking place in the poem. PREPARE!  

The following myths will be part of your test:
1. Arachne and Athena
2. Daphne and Apollo
3. Artemis and Orion
4. Poseidon and Athena 

 
PRACTICE TEST for "The Olympians" NOTE: I did not find an image of Hades that I felt was "accurate." Please be aware of this when taking your quiz. Good Luck..... REMEMBER THAT YOU SHOULD NOT USE YOUR NOTES for this assessment! USE THIS AS A PRE-TEST! Please use a sheet of notebook paper and organize it in the following way:

ONE ROW WITH FOUR BOXES IN EACH ROW. YOU WILL HAVE 14 ROWS!



For each image, please identify the Greek and Roman names, the other symbols not present in the image, and all of the god's domains. Please follow this structure for each response.

Dear Mythology Kids,
If you missed class, we completed the following,,,,,

1. We reviewed with a partner concerning the "Creation Myth." The best to prep is to make sure you feel good about the practice quiz on the previous post.

2. Students took the quiz.

3. We then started with the Greek Pantheon by identifying the gods by GREEK, ROMAN, SYMBOLS, and DOMAINS. If you missed class, please obtain this information from one of your friends. We stopped at Demeter!

HOMEWORK:
1. Please read pages 24---- to the first 1/2 of 36. This section pertains to each of the 13 Olympians. Your assignment is to identify THREE POINTS of INTEREST for each god, and then record that as your homework. For example:

ZEUS:
1. I find it interesting that he is the king of the gods; yet, he lacks leadership skills; he is so indecisive.
2. He is recognized as not making difficult decisions too often, but I think it is interesting that when he does, he is fair.
3. The fact that he thought the SKY was better than the SEA is interesting to me.

You should have a minimum of three points for each god. THIS IS DUE ON FRIDAY!

Friday, September 2nd! Welcome to September!

Dear Mythology Kids,
1. We completed the Creation myth associated with the Greeks. It is the most significant story, as it explains how the gods came into existence. Please make sure you communicate with someone that you know who is taking Mythology.

2. In addition, if you missed class, we began with a review that was placed as JOURNAL #1 in your journals, I have actually copied the review for you below. Please complete the review! PRINT IT OFF and then GLUE it to the first page in your journal. Label it as #1.

2. Even if you missed class, I still expect you to be prepared for class on Thursday Please communicate with someone else in class! Go to the Internet and look up "Greek Creation Myth," in order to obtain assistance!


HOMEWORK:
1. PREPARE for QUIZ #1 covering THE CREATION (your flow chart)
3. Create flashcards (if you complete them, then you can use a 1/4 on the quiz)
4. Complete the practice quiz (for each question that you answer correctly, you receive 1/2 of point of credit added to the actual quiz score)

I When I see you on Wednesday., we will review, and then take your quiz. Remember to use the practice quiz as a pre-test. You should put all of your information away while you take the quiz. THIS IS CLEARLY AN INTEGRITY ISSUE ON YOUR PART, my fine young friends. In addition, you should print a copy of the quiz as a word document, and be prepared to bring it with you to class on Wed.. We will review for the quiz by discussing the questions on the practice quiz. If you choose to use flashcards on the quiz , you can use a 1/4 of the ones that you complete. DON'T FORGET to review the information concerning your "history lesson." In addition, you will receive questions from "Tell me a Story" (Front of your yellow handout).

Dear Mythology Kids,
If you missed class, I hope to see you on Monday ! Do your best to make it back, but stay home and rest if you are feeling ill. We did cover a significant amount today. Please visit with a friend from class.

HOMEWORK:

What did we do in class, Crampton?
1. We completed the Disclosure Document.
2. Each student received a packet of handouts, that were then placed in the appropriate locations within the notebook. If you missed class, please stop by so you can collect the handouts. They are for the next four weeks of class.
3. Students shared thier "What is a Classic?" assignment, and we discussed why Classical Mythology is so valuable and worth studying.
4. We began out discussion regarding ancient Greece. Please communicate with a student in class to obtain the lecture notes.

2. "What is a Classic? " 
What is a Classic? DUE DATE: Thursday, August 25th
Explanation: If something is referred to as "classic," what does that mean? Many times when individuals hear the world "classic," they naturally think of pieces of literature or art, which, of course apply and make sense; however, in addition to literature and art, there are a myriad of other aspects to our culture that could be considered "classic."
Prior to explaining your assignment, allow me to give you some insight into the word "classic." It has been suggested that the Latin root classicus, relates to the "first or highest class or division" in which the Roman people were anciently divided.  These individuals were often spoken of as "classici." So, the word "CLASSIC" could be interpreted to mean "of the first class" or of the highest order. " The meaning is probably best captured by our slang expression, "classy."
So, knowing this little bit of information, what do you consider to be "classic?" 
Assignment: For your assignment, you are to consider the word "classic," and then locate an image of what you to be "classic." There is no "right" or "wrong" answer, as long as you can justify your choice as being "of the highest order." In addition, you need to further justify your choice in writinb by answering the following questions in your response.
  1. Identify your "classic " choice.
  2. In your words, what does the term "classic" mean to you?
  3. In a brief paragraph, explain why you consider your choice to be "classic?" Please be specific. A response such as, "Because I like it," is not sufficient!

Monday, Feb. 29th! It's nice to be back!

Dear Mythology Kids,

STOP MISSING CLASS! I love your guts, but I am going to "call you out!" If you are ill, then by all means stay at home, but many of you are not getting up in time for school, so you are missing first period, or you are going out for lunch, and failing to watch the clock. ARRIVE ON TIME, as it is SO RUDE when you are LATE! FIGURE IT OUT, my young friends. I don't have the time to repeat myself, even though I do that frequently in class. Seriously, I don't have an extra 80 minutes to offer you. VISIT WITH ANOTHER STUDENT IN CLASS, in order to find out what you missed! CHANGE YOURSELVES and if you need help then contact a psychologist! I am happy to act as your "psychologist!"

1. Students were introduced to an assignment called "DESK TOP TEACHING!" Please communicate with a friend from class first, then come to see me in order to obtain a vocabulary word.

 2. Students were then given TWO different assignnents, "Dateline Troy" and "Iliad Monologue." Students were asked to read the assignments and then choose the ONE they want to complete for FRIDAY. They are too large to post here, so please stop by Tuesday after school (after ACT testing), or early Wednesday morning. I recommend visiting with a friend from class to enlighten you regarding both assignments.

 HOMEWORK:
1. Desk Top Teaching is due on March 11th
2. EITHER "Dateline: Troy" or "Iliad Monologue" due on FRIDAY!

If you missed class, we completed the following:
1. Each student received a "character" from The Odyssey. For those of you that missed class, your "character" are the SIRENS!

2. We then went to the lab, where each student located THREE different sources regarding their assigned character. Students then annotated and notated for ORANGE and GREEN. I asked that you also focus on answering the following question: WHAT DOES MY CHARACTER SYMBOLIZE/REPRESENT? 

3. If students were unable to complete locating the sources, and annotating them, then they were asked to complete the in-class work as homework.

 
Thrinacia, Island of Helios...."DO NOT EAT THE COWS!"

QUEST on FRIDAY! 02/18/2016

Dear Mythology Kids,

Remember that your QUEST covering the ILIAD will take place on FRIDAY. There are four parts to your assessment:
1. Timeline Events
2. Character Identification
3. Image Identification (Why is the event depicted so essential to the Iliad's plot progression?)
4. You will see two clips from a film called HELEN of TROY.

How do I prepare?
  • I suggest going back through the images located on the blog that we have used for the character discussions offered in class. Can you identify who and what with each image? Can you also answer the question, "Why is the event depicted so essential to the Iliad's plot progression?)
  • I also recommend that you go through the graphic organizer we have used in class. Make sure you are familiar with each character and their significance to the Iliad and The Odyssey.
  • Make sure you have read The Iliad located in your textbook...pgs. 185-200

 EXTRA- CREDIT! 

Consider the following images. Answer question #1 and #2 for each image.

QUESTION #1: Identify who is depicted in the artwork, and what is taking place.
QUESTION #2: Explain the importance of the depicted event to the Iliad's plot progression and character development.
